Some coverage now trains the answer engines
Nine signed an Australian-first Copilot agreement and News Corp licensed to OpenAI, so a placement in those mastheads can surface inside AI answers.
A placement in an Australian masthead can now end up inside an AI answer, and which masthead you land in has started to matter for a reason that has nothing to do with readership. Nine signed an Australian-first agreement with Microsoft Copilot in July 2026. News Corp signed a multi-year licensing deal with OpenAI in 2024. Those agreements put the publishers' journalism inside the corpus the assistants draw on.
That is a new reason to care about earned media, and it sits alongside a set of search numbers that most teams have not absorbed yet.
The numbers that frame it
Zero-click searches reached 68.01% of US Google searches between January and April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. That is SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data, US desktop and mobile web.
AI Mode, the thing everyone is panicking about, was 0.34% of searches in the same window. The panic is running roughly a hundred times ahead of the query share. AI Overviews is where the actual traffic change happened.
Here is the operative number. Seer Interactive tracked 53 brands, 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion impressions between January 2025 and February 2026. When an AI Overview is present, organic click-through rate runs at about 2.1% if your page is cited inside the overview, and about 0.9% if it is not. On a page with no overview at all, about 3.3%.
Being cited is now the difference between roughly 2.1% and 0.9% on the same query. The click did not disappear. It got rationed, and citation is the ration card.
What Google says you should do, in writing
Google published a guide called Optimising for generative AI features in May 2026, and it dismantles several things agencies are still selling.
On llms.txt files: Google Search does not use them. They neither help nor hurt.
On structured data: not required for generative AI search.
On breaking content into small chunks for retrieval: there is no requirement to do that.
On manufacturing brand mentions across the web: not as helpful as claimed.
The eligibility gate it does name is simple. The page has to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. If you have suppressed snippets anywhere, you have suppressed AI eligibility there too.
And Google names the content type that fails, with an example: commodity content, along the lines of 7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers. That is the exact format most content programmes still produce monthly.
Why earned coverage sits above all of it
If the technical levers are mostly a myth, what is left is being the source that gets quoted. That is a PR job, not an SEO job.
A licensing agreement makes a publisher's archive eligible material. It does not guarantee your mention gets retrieved. What gets retrieved is a sentence that carries an entity, a number and an attribution, because that is the shape of a sentence a model can use to answer a specific question.
So the thing to engineer is the sentence, not the placement.
Compare these two. A line saying the company said demand had grown strongly over the past year is useless. Nothing retrievable. Now: Ignis Partners, a Sydney marketing firm, said commercial clients are now running paid search and AI-answer optimisation as one budget line rather than two. Entity, location, specific claim, attributable.
Give journalists the second kind. Put the number and the attribution in the same sentence, in your release, in your quote, in your source responses. Journalists lift quotes largely intact, so the sentence you write is often the sentence that gets published, and the sentence that gets published is what gets retrieved.
The honest scale of it
AI referral traffic is small. On most sites it is around 1% of sessions or less. It converts far better, Semrush puts AI-referred visitors near 4.4 times the organic conversion rate, and Seer's client data shows ChatGPT-referred traffic converting near 16% against about 1.8% for Google organic. ChatGPT referral volume grew 206% year on year to January 2026.
High quality, low volume, growing fast. Do not rebuild your entire strategy around 1% of sessions. Do build the habit now, because the habit costs you nothing extra.
Write every quote as though a machine will repeat it word for word, because increasingly one will.
