SEO for a site with no backlinks

A new site with no authority cannot win competitive terms. It can win specific ones, immediately, and that is where the whole early programme belongs.

A site with no links behind it is not going to rank for a broad commercial term, and spending six months trying is the most common way a new programme fails.

What a new site can do is win the terms where the competition has no authority either, and there are more of those than people expect.

Why the broad term is unwinnable early

The pages ranking for a high volume commercial term have years of accumulated links, established topical history and brand search behind them.

None of that can be shortcut. So targeting that term means producing a page that will sit on page four for a year, and concluding that search does not work.

The terms worth having early are the ones where the ranking pages are weak: thin content, wrong intent, or nobody addressing the question at all.

Where the early wins are

Long, specific questions. Four and five word queries with clear intent. Low volume individually, and they convert at a far higher rate than the broad term, and the pages ranking for them are often answering something adjacent rather than the actual question.

Location plus service, at the suburb level. Competitive at a city level, frequently open at a suburb level. This only works if the pages are genuinely about the place rather than templated, which is where most attempts fall over.

The comparison and decision queries. What something costs, how long it takes, what is included, what the alternatives are. Buyers search these constantly and most businesses refuse to answer them publicly.

Problem-shaped queries. Somebody describing a symptom rather than naming a service. The person searching does not know the industry term, and the pages that rank are all written in the industry term.

Your own brand and product terms, which should be free and frequently are not, because the site has no page dedicated to them.

Earn the links from one thing, not from outreach

Link building as an activity rarely works for a small site. Links as a by-product of something worth citing does.

Which in practice means one of a small number of things: original data from your own operations, a tool or calculator people actually use, a genuinely complete reference on a narrow topic, or being the source journalists call for a particular subject.

One of those, done properly, produces more links than a year of requests. The rest of the authority comes from being around, being mentioned, and being searched for by name.

The internal structure does real work

On a site with no external authority, internal linking is the main lever available for directing what little authority exists.

Which means a clear hub and spoke structure: one strong page per service, supported by a cluster of specific pages that all link up to it. Each specific page earns its own rankings, and collectively they tell search engines what the hub page is about.

A flat site with forty unconnected pages wastes this entirely.

The mechanics have to be clean

None of the above survives a site that cannot be crawled or rendered.

Fast pages, server rendered content, a sitemap that is accurate, no accidental noindex, canonical tags that point where they should, and a crawl path to every page that matters. These are not growth levers. They are the floor, and a surprising number of sites fail on one of them.

The timeline, honestly

Specific low competition pages can start ranking within weeks. A cluster of them builds into meaningful traffic over a few months. The broad commercial term comes later, after the specific pages have established that the site is about this subject and after the first real links have arrived.

Which means the plan is deliberately sequenced: specific first, broad later, and the broad page is built early anyway so it accumulates history while the specific pages do the work.
