The Ignis team reviewing work in the studio

Does A Sydney Business Need A Sydney Marketing Team?

Strategy, ads and search can run from any city. Film, photography and the meetings where hard calls get made go better in the same room, so plan around those.

Not for everything. A Sydney business can run its ads, search, reporting and day-to-day strategy with a team in any Australian city, and the work comes out the same. Film, photography and the harder conversations are the exception, because those go better when people can stand in the same room.

So the useful question is narrower than where the team sits. Ask which parts of your marketing need someone physically in Sydney, and how often.

Work that runs from anywhere

Google Ads, Meta, SEO, analytics and a website build all live in a browser. What matters there is access to the accounts, a clear report and someone who answers when the numbers move.

Time zones are a small issue. Melbourne shares Sydney's clock all year, Brisbane runs an hour behind during daylight saving, and Perth runs two hours behind in winter and three in summer.

Work that needs someone on site

Real photos and video of your people and your work have to be shot where the work happens. A shoot depends on the first shift on a factory floor in Wetherill Park, or the morning a crane is booked on a site in Parramatta, and those dates move at short notice.

Building sites add their own rules. Expect a site induction, PPE and, on many sites, a white card for everyone on the ground, and a crew without them waits at the gate.

Distance also costs more than it looks on a map. Wetherill Park to Mona Vale is well over an hour in a van, so a good shot list groups locations by area and leaves room for traffic.

Conversations worth having in person

Video calls handle the regular rhythm well. A rebrand, a budget cut or a new general manager reviewing the whole function is different, because the people in that meeting are deciding what the business will be known for.

Plan for those few meetings a year in the same room, and run everything else by video.

Sydney is several markets

Google's local results change with where the searcher is standing. A search for a commercial fit-out company in Parramatta and the same search in North Sydney can return different businesses, because proximity is one of the things Google weighs.

Local knowledge helps here. A page for Mosman and a page for Bankstown have different buyers, different property and different jobs to show, and someone who knows both will not write the same page twice with the suburb name swapped.

PR works differently again. The Sydney Morning Herald, The Daily Telegraph and the Australian Financial Review cover Sydney business, but a trade title in your own sector often reaches more of your buyers, and that relationship depends on the industry more than the postcode.

Questions that decide it

Ask these of any team you are considering, wherever it is based:

  • Who will actually be on site at our shoots, and how many shoot days a year does the scope include?
  • Who answers when enquiries drop in a week?
  • Do the ad accounts, domains and social profiles stay in our name?
  • How often do we meet in person, and who attends?
  • Does the report show revenue?

The answers tell you more than an office address does.

How we run it

Ignis is based in Sydney, with clients across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. Strategy calls run by video on a set rhythm, film and photography happen on site, and the monthly report is written against revenue rather than activity.
